Guide to perfect print

Get your print to the presses perfectly with everything you need to get set up

A4 portrait document

Bleed (3mm): 303mm x 426mm

The bleed area extends out an extra 3mm from the edge of your finished artwork. Make sure that you don't place any important content or artwork elements in this area, as it will get trimmed off.

Safe area (3mm): 291mm x 414mm

We recommend that no text is placed in this area as anything placed outside of this box will risk being cut off.

Frequently asked questions

You’ll notice that if you put multiple items into your basket, they may be sorted into “delivery groups” based on delivery days, in order to help us ship your items as quickly and efficiently as possible. Find out more about delivery groups here.

How do I set up my artwork for print?

Do you provide downloadable templates?

On most of our product pages, you can find free downloadable templates to help you set up your artwork for print. They’re available in AI, IDML and PDF formats to suit the design software you’re working in. Our downloadable templates include key information on creating artwork as well as instructions on how to save out your print-ready PDF.

What is bleed?
Bleed is an area of print outside the document that must be added to your artwork before it’s sent off for print. By adding the all-important bleed (a minimum of 3mm on all edges), there’ll be no risk of white space left on your document and it'll be trimmed correctly without cutting into any design. Some products require a different amount of bleed, so be sure to check our downloadable templates to find out the correct amount.

What is safe area?
The safe area is the space inside where your print will be trimmed. Keeping any important parts of your design away from this area will make sure that they aren’t accidentally trimmed off due to the natural movement while your print gets finished. Our downloadable templates will indicate the recommended amount of safe area for your print.

What’s the difference between RGB and CMYK?
RGB is the colour gamut used to display images on a computer screen, and stands for Red, Green and Blue. CMYK is the colour gamut used for conventional printing, and stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Unless you’re printing Gicée Fine Art Prints, Photographic Prints or Mugs, please set up your artwork in CMYK.

Why do I need to embed fonts?
If you don’t embed fonts and your document is opened on another computer system that doesn’t have access to the original fonts, different fonts will be substituted instead. This could really affect the look of your finished print. Embedding fonts into your original design will stop them from changing. Find out how to embed your fonts here.

How to export a PDF
Exporting your design into a print-ready PDF is easy. We’ve created some handy video guides which will take you through the process which you can find here.

What is perfect binding?

Perfect binding process where the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong adhesive. This method gives the book a clean, professional look with a flat spine, making it ideal for thicker publications like catalogues, brochures and manuals.

Find out more about all of our book binding types in our book printing guide.

How are Perfect Bound Books made?

Perfect Bound Books are crafted through a unique binding process that involves several easy steps. First, we print the pages and trim them to the right size. Then, we gather the pages and gently grind down the spine to create a rough surface, which helps the adhesive bond better. After that, we apply a flexible glue to the spine and wrap a cover around the book, pressing it to ensure a secure hold. Finally, we trim the book again for a polished finish. This method results in a professional printed book with a flat spine, perfect for all your publishing needs! To find out more, visit our book printing guide.

Should I upload my artwork as spreads or single pages?

When it comes to Perfect Bound Book printing, we handle inners and covers a bit differently to ensure the best quality and alignment for your final product.

 Inners as single pages:
Inners are required as single pages because it helps us accurately sequence and lay out your content. This way, each page is positioned correctly and matches up perfectly when the booklet is printed and bound. It's all about making sure your reader flips through a seamless, professionally finished product.

Covers as spreads or single pages:
For covers, you have more flexibility. You can upload them as spreads if you have a continuous design that spans the front cover, back cover, and spine, creating a striking visual impact. Alternatively, you can upload them as single pages if your cover design is distinct for the front and back. This flexibility helps you showcase your brand or message exactly how you envisioned it.

By following these guidelines, we ensure your print products look polished and professional. Need more help? Find more artwork support for book printing here

What paper GSM should I select for Perfect binding?

When selecting the paper GSM for your Perfect Bound projects, consider the overall look and feel you want to achieve. Typically, a paper weight ranging from 120 GSM to 350 GSM is ideal for perfect binding. Books like novels or reports often use lighter paper (around 120-150 GSM), while magazines or catalogues that need a more premium feel might opt for a heavier stock closer to 250-350 GSM. It's important to balance durability with the tactile experience you wish to provide your readers. We recommend using a thicker paper for your covers for a luxury feel, and a thinner paper for your inner pages to make the book an easy page-turner.

What is the ideal gutter size for Perfect Bound Books?

In Perfect Bound Books, the gutter, often called the 'safe area', refers to the blank space between the text and the inner edge of a page. To ensure your content remains easily readable and does not get obscured in the spine, it is advisable to maintain a gutter of at least 3mm on each edge.
